Patent Landscape Updates for Coenzyme Q10 Raw Materials; Supplier Selection and Market Access Deserve Attention
A US patent lawsuit concerning ubiquinol has seen new developments. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York ruled that some claims of Kaneka’s CoQ10 patents are invalid, opening up new opportunities for other ubiquinol raw material suppliers to enter the US market.
For dietary supplement manufacturers, CoQ10 remains widely used in products targeting cardiovascular health, energy metabolism and healthy aging. When sourcing raw materials in the future, besides purity, stability and bioavailability, brand licensing, patent status and compliance requirements of target markets may also become critical factors in purchasing decisions. Suppliers offer CoQ10 products of diverse sources and specifications, enabling brands to make selections aligned with their market positioning.

New-Generation High-Purity D-chiro-Inositol Raw Material Launched Overseas This Week
An overseas ingredient supplier has rolled out a new-generation high-purity D-chiro-Inositol raw material this week, specially developed for women’s health dietary supplements. The product boasts a purity of ≥99%, with heavy metal and solvent residue levels complying with USP standards, and can be directly formulated into capsule and powder supplements.
The manufacturer states that optimized crystallization technology improves solubility for easier formulation processing. Full COA documentation is provided to support regulatory filings in the EU and Southeast Asian markets. Samples have been sent to supplement brands across multiple countries for testing. Commercial supply is expected to commence in Q4, and the ingredient is poised to replace conventional blended inositol raw materials.

EU Tightens Usage Limits for Certain Artificial Colorants in Dietary Supplements
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released a draft update on food additive assessments this week, proposing stricter limits for selected artificial colorants used in dietary supplements, with a focus on children’s nutritional supplements. The new rules will raise standards for impurity testing and extend the review period for dossiers.
European supplement brands have proactively switched to natural colorants such as annatto and spirulina color. Many Asian ingredient exporters report that higher requirements for compliance documents and test reports will apply to supplement ingredients exported to Europe. ETO residues and plasticizer testing will become mandatory, and non-compliant shipments may be detained at border inspection posts.

Clean Label Becomes a Baseline Requirement for Products
Industry research this week identifies two major trends in the health ingredients market. First, demand for natural additives from food-medicine homologous sources keeps rising as replacements for artificial preservatives and synthetic colorants. Second, the microbiome-related supplement segment is booming. Consumers prioritize strain traceability and supporting clinical literature instead of merely chasing high viable cell counts.
Brands are cutting redundant additives, making clean label a fundamental product threshold. Raw material suppliers are shifting toward the development of custom blended ingredients.

Attack Incident Occurs in the Strait of Hormuz
According to Shipping Gazette, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued Security Advisory No.143 on 29 September local time, stating it had received third-party reports that a vessel came under attack while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on the evening of 28 September, which triggered a fire on board. The fire has since been extinguished; the crew are safe and the vessel has resumed its voyage. No reports of environmental impact or damage have been received so far.
As of 29 September, data from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) confirmed at least 86 verified attacks on merchant ships, resulting in the deaths of 24 seafarers.

Container Freight Rates for Food Ingredients on Asia-Europe Routes Edge Up
Container freight rates for food ingredients on Asia-Europe routes have edged up this week, mainly driven by carriers’ space tightening and higher detour costs on Red Sea lanes. Export volumes of domestic supplement ingredients including food additives and plant extracts remain stable. Southeast Asia routes have ample container space with minor freight fluctuations.
Multiple freight forwarders advise exporters shipping functional ingredients to the EU to reserve extra transit lead time. For hazardous-class food additives, booking documents need advance review to avoid cut-off delays. Freight rates for US West Coast routes stay low, yet partial port congestion still extends cargo pickup cycles. Industry players recommend enterprises secure container space in advance and complete MSDS documentation to mitigate the risk of raw material detention at ports.
