Natural Hangover-Relief Molecule Effectively Alleviates Liver Injury
Corn Oligopeptides (COP) can rapidly relieve drunkenness after alcohol consumption and ameliorate liver damage. Manufactured from corn gluten meal via slurry mixing, protease enzymatic hydrolysis, separation, filtration and spray drying, these small-molecule peptides generally feature a molecular weight below 1500 Da and appear as yellow or tan powder.
Unlike macromolecular proteins, COP does not require complicated digestive breakdown in the digestive tract; it can be fully absorbed through the intestinal tract in intact peptide chains, boasting higher bioavailability. Moreover, COP is nutrient-dense and contains all essential amino acids for humans. It exhibits excellent water solubility and stability, unaffected by gastrointestinal conditions.
A recent study published in Food and Chemical Toxicology uncovered the critical protective effect of COP against chemical liver injury: it significantly mitigates liver damage induced by sodium nitrite (SN). This natural corn-derived "hangover-relief molecule" opens innovative avenues for the development of liver-protective and anti-hangover products.

Whey Protein Prices Remain High with Persistent Global Supply Shortage
The whey protein market is currently under dual pressure from tight supply and rising downstream demand. As high-protein foods, sports nutrition items and functional beverages gain broader application, demand for whey protein stays strong. Nevertheless, its supply is restrained by dairy processing capacity and the output of cheese-making byproducts, so a rapid supply expansion cannot be realized in the short run.

Major Regulatory Overhaul for Probiotic Health Supplements
The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) released the Draft Provisions on Registration and Filing Applications for Health Food Using Probiotic Raw Materials this week, with public consultations open to the entire industry until August 24, marking a major regulatory adjustment governing probiotic health supplements.
The new draft mandates full strain number labeling for all probiotics and requires the establishment of a seed batch traceability system, alongside refined labeling standards for total viable bacteria count and auxiliary materials. It will dismantle the single registration model that has been in place for over two decades by introducing a dual-track management system combining registration and filing. Supporting detailed application rules for plant and animal-derived health food raw materials have also been rolled out, tightening requirements for raw material source quarantine and traceability certificates.
Industry insiders noted that the new policy will shorten the time-to-market cycle for new products from compliant manufacturers. However, it raises entry barriers regarding strain safety verification and quality control system investment, urging small and medium-sized enterprises to complete testing and filing documentation preparations in advance.

UK Functional Beverage Brand Skip Launches Magnesium-Infused Sparkling Drinks
According to FoodBev Media, Skip, a UK functional soft drink brand, has rolled out two magnesium-fortified sparkling drinks to expand its healthy beverage lineup.
The magnesium range comes in two flavors: Berry Cherry and Kiwi Lime. Each 250ml can contain 188mg of magnesium, alongside vitamin B6 and vitamin D, covering 50% of the recommended daily intake of magnesium.
This new launch builds on the brand’s existing portfolio of functional beverages, including CBD drinks in Peach Ginger, Elderflower Mint and Lemon Basil flavors released last year, as well as lion’s mane mushroom-infused drinks launched in January this year. Magnesium is highlighted as the core nutrient of the new products.
The brand stated that the new formulation is designed to boost consumers’ wellness. Magnesium supports muscle function, relaxation, energy metabolism and sleep quality; vitamin B6 contributes to normal nervous system function, while vitamin D helps maintain healthy bones and teeth.

Clean-Label Natural Ingredients & Supplement Sector Shift Toward Evidence-Based Precision Nutrition
Market research firm Mordor Intelligence released its latest report this week, stating that clean-label natural ingredients represent a core long-term trend for health supplements and food additives. Global demand for natural colorants and fermented preservative raw materials has surged. Regulators in multiple countries are phasing out petroleum-based synthetic food additives, while European and American brands are undertaking large-scale formula reformulations.
Meanwhile, the supplement industry is pivoting toward evidence-based precision nutrition. Generic multivitamins have lost momentum, whereas orders for targeted plant extracts supporting liver protection, weight management and cognitive vitality have risen sharply. High-bioavailability delivery technologies including liposomes and microcapsules have become standard R&D priorities for raw material manufacturers.
Industry analysts predict that natural ingredient suppliers with complete safety assessment documentation and stable mass production capacity will capture export opportunities. Small and medium-sized manufacturers must accelerate the upgrade of clean-label formulas and accumulate clinical research data.

Global Container Freight Rates Keep Falling, Prices Adjusted on Major Europe-US Lanes
After the previous rally, the global container shipping market has witnessed a notable pullback. Figures released by Drewry on July 30 show the World Container Index (WCI) dipped 3% month-on-month to USD 4,255 per 40ft container, with freight rates sliding on both Asia-Europe and Transpacific trade lanes.
While overall rates have started to cool off, they remain at relatively elevated levels. In addition, geopolitical tensions, fuel costs and shifts in supply and demand across shipping routes may trigger short-term price volatility.
