US Imposes 60% Tariff Lock on Westbound Transatlantic Air Cargo to Greenland!

According to data from Rotate, the countries targeted by US President Trump's proposed tariff hikes over the Greenland dispute account for approximately 60% of America’s westbound air cargo volume. Data from the analytics and consulting firm shows that the eight nations facing the proposed 10% tariffs shipped a total of 685,000 metric tons of air cargo to the US between May and October, representing nearly 60% of the total 1.15 million metric tons of westbound cargo.

Germany was the largest source country during this six-month period, with shipments reaching 263,000 metric tons, followed by the UK at 138,000 metric tons and France at 125,000 metric tons. This move marks the second time in the past year that these countries have been hit by US tariff measures.

In April 2025, the US imposed a 10% tariff on the EU, which was raised to 15% in September, while the UK’s tariff remained at 10%. Rotate noted that despite the earlier tariff measures, air cargo volumes from the affected countries to the US continued to rise between April and October, as several non-European markets were subject to higher tariff rates.

However, the impact of the new round of tariffs is difficult to predict, as rival countries will not face the same magnitude of tariff increases this time. Rotate also highlighted uncertainties over the feasibility of imposing tariffs on individual countries, given their participation in a single market.
President Trump announced on social media on Saturday that a 10% tariff will be levied on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, with the measure taking effect on February 1. He stated that the tariff rate could be raised to 25% at a later stage and will remain in place until an agreement is reached.
