Mulberry Leaves for Anti-Aging — “Whole Food” Outperforms Extracts
Mulberry leaves are a familiar medicinal and edible material. Traditional Chinese medicine has long used mulberry leaves to improve vision, nourish the liver, and resist wind-related ailments. They are also believed to help with dizziness, dysentery, maintaining youthful skin, relieving cough and cold symptoms, promoting blood circulation, and easing abdominal pain. China has a 3,000-year history of mulberry cultivation.
Mulberry leaves are rich in nutrients, including polyphenol antioxidants, vitamin C, zinc, calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and more. Dietary fiber and phenolic compounds in mulberry leaves have synergistic anti-aging effects. Research from Nanchang University frequently references the concept of “whole food,” which is becoming a research hotspot.
Whole foods (WFs) are typically defined as minimally processed foods close to their original state, without added sugars, starches, flavorings, or artificial ingredients. The concept emphasizes consuming natural, unprocessed, or minimally processed foods to maintain their inherent properties. Research on mulberry leaves as whole foods offers new insights and directions for developing health-functional foods or ingredients.

Functions of DAO (D-amino acid oxidase)
DAO (D-amino acid oxidase) is an enzyme with multiple functions and applications.
1. Basic Functions of DAO
DAO primarily catalyzes the oxidative deamination of D-amino acids, converting them into corresponding keto acids, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide. This process plays an important role in amino acid metabolism and neurotransmitter regulation in living organisms.
2. Source and Distribution of DAO
DAO is widely present in animals, plants, and microorganisms. In mammals, DAO is mainly found in the kidneys, liver, and brain. In humans, DAO activity is highest in the upper villi cells of the small intestinal mucosa, especially in the jejunum and ileum
3. Structure and Characteristics of DAO
DAO is a copper-containing and pyridoxal phosphate-associated protein with a molecular weight of about 84,000 Da. Its gene consists of five exons encoding 751 amino acids, with the active site located in the second exon (524–618). DAO activity can be inhibited by compounds such as cyanide, hydroxylamine, and aminoguanidine.
