New Discovery Found in This Dietary Flavonoid for Effectively Reducing the Negative Impacts of Aging
Apigenin is a naturally occurring dietary flavonoid abundantly found in fruits and vegetables. It was named after its initial isolation from celery and is also present in parsley, chamomile, grapes, citrus fruits, and many medicinal plants. Apigenin has low water solubility and high permeability, allowing it to easily cross the plasma membrane of host cells. Additionally, it is lipophilic and can survive in the low-acid environment of the host's gastrointestinal tract. In recent years, apigenin has garnered significant attention due to its various biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects, making it a hotspot molecule in nutritional, pharmacological, and medical research.
Researchers from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine published a study online in the journal Advanced Science, revealing that apigenin can inhibit the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) by targeting the PRDX6-iPLA2 axis, thereby mitigating the development of multiple aging-related diseases. The dietary flavonoid apigenin exhibits notable "senomorphic" activity, which regulates senescence secretory activity. While the core feature of anti-aging compounds like ABT-737 and procyanidin C1 (PCC1) is inducing apoptosis in senescent cells, apigenin's key characteristic is its selective inhibition of SASP, thereby suppressing the onset of aging-related diseases.

The main efficacy and effects of D-allulose
D-allulose (also known as allulose) is naturally present in small amounts in foods such as figs. It has about 70% of the sweetness of sucrose, and after ingestion, most of it is excreted from the body within 6 hours, barely participating in human metabolism and thus contributing minimal calories. Its sweetness is pure, and its taste and bulk characteristics are very similar to those of sucrose. It is also a functional ingredient beneficial to human health.
Existing animal and human trials indicate that D-allulose can inhibit the small intestine's absorption of glucose and improve insulin sensitivity, thereby reducing blood sugar spikes. It can regulate fat metabolism, lower lipid levels in plasma and the liver, and reduce fat accumulation, making it a potential anti-obesity agent. Additionally, D-allulose exhibits certain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Natural "Sucrose Substitute" Approved in China
On July 2, 2025, the National Health Commission issued Announcement No. 4 of 2025, officially approving five substances, including D-allulose, as new food ingredients. D-allulose is a rare six-carbon ketose found in small amounts in natural foods such as figs, kiwis, wheat, and raisins.
D-allulose has been recognized as a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) food ingredient. It is almost calorie-free, with only 0.4 calories per gram, which is just one-tenth of sucrose. Its sweetness is about 70% that of sucrose, with a similar taste profile and no bitterness or artificial flavor. It can inhibit liver fat enzymes and intestinal α-glucosidase, reducing fat accumulation in the body and suppressing elevated blood sugar levels. Multiple studies have also confirmed that allulose helps control appetite, improve hyperglycemia symptoms, and regulate liver metabolic enzymes to inhibit fat storage, thereby aiding in weight management.
